How to use KYTE

Photograph the whole tree first, then a close photo of a few leaves still on it, if you can reach them; the bark helps too. On a later visit, stand in the same place, so the two photos can be compared.

Find lists interesting trees near you: notable, NZ Tree Register, big and few on record. Walk there points the way, and the camera labels the trees so you can tell which one it is.

Saved visits work offline. The tree records for places you have already looked at, and Find’s lists once opened, stay on this phone; new places and the aerial photos need a connection.

Sign in to back up your trees and open them on another device. You choose which visits to send to ALTO. You can export your visits and their original photos at any time.

KYTE lists the trees nearest the photo’s location, and uses the direction the camera faced when the phone records it. The photos of the tree you send to ALTO (the whole tree, its leaves, flowers and fruit) also go to Pl@ntNet, which suggests a species to you and the reviewer.
